HANOI, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's northern port city of Hai Phong will establish a free trade zone covering about 6,292 hectares this year, local daily VnExpress reported Wednesday.

The policy was approved by the Standing Board of the Hai Phong Party Committee at a meeting on Tuesday, the report said.

It is expected to boost regional gross domestic product growth and restructure the industrial-logistics value chain in Hai Phong and the wider northern region.

According to Le Tien Chau, secretary of the Hai Phong Party Committee, the establishment of the free trade zone is a strategic move to create new growth drivers and realize the goal of building Hai Phong into a modern seaport city that leads in industrialization, modernization and digital transformation.
