Vietnam's 2 biggest cities to pioneer national pollution control plan

HANOI, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will select Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City as pioneers in developing the national action plan on pollution control and air quality management, Vietnam News Agency reported Thursday.

The country's two biggest cities, facing the greatest pollution pressures, are expected to develop the plan with breakthrough solutions that will later be scaled up nationwide, said the report.

The Ministry of Construction, in coordination with the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City people's committees, has been tasked with submitting to the government a roadmap for developing a modern public transport system, including subways, elevated railways and clean-energy buses.

The two cities are also required to map out mechanisms and policies to relocate polluting facilities out of inner-city and residential areas, the state-owned media reported.
