12th ASEAN Para Games concludes in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The 12th ASEAN Para Games came to an end on Friday in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, with Indonesia topping the medal table.

Held at the 60,000-seat Morodok Techo National Stadium, the closing ceremony featured a musical show, a Kun Bokator marital arts performance, a parade of para-athletes, speeches, and the extinguishment of the Games flame with a fireworks display.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said it was another pride for Cambodia to host the regional Para Games successfully and that the one-week Games truly showcased the spirit of friendship and solidarity among Southeast Asian countries.

"I hope more than 600 million population of ASEAN and Timor-Leste will keep in mind good memories at both the 32nd Southeast Asian Games and the 12th ASEAN Para Games," he said.

Meanwhile, Hun Sen said the Olympic Council of Asia had already granted rights to Cambodia to host the fifth Asian Youth Games in 2029.

"We will gather here in Cambodia again on a larger scale than this in 2029," he said.

According to the organizing committee, the 12th ASEAN Para Games brought together a total of 1,453 para-athletes from 11 Southeast Asian countries contesting in 14 sports and more than 400 events.

Indonesia topped the medal tally with 159 gold, 148 silver and 94 bronze medals, followed by Thailand with 126-110-92 and Vietnam with 66-58-77.

Hosts Cambodia came in eighth with 9-18-44.

Thailand will host the 13th edition of the Games in January 2026.
