PHNOM PENH -- Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni said in a royal message on Monday that peace in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) needs to be protected, stressing that it has created enormous socio-economic opportunities for the peoples.
In a message to the opening ceremony of the 43rd General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly here, the monarch said for ASEAN, the spirit of "Togetherness" has always been set as the backdrop of collective efforts to keep the region peaceful over decades. (Cambodia-ASEAN-King)

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysian political parties are still in discussion on how to form the next government following the indecisive election results, with the country's king Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah extending the deadline on Monday.
The king initially asked the political parties to present a name to fill the prime minister's post by Monday and after their failure to do so, the deadline has been extended by 24 hours to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, the palace said in a statement. (Malaysia-General Election)

HONG KONG -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) will elect 36 deputies to the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, on Dec. 15, according to a decision by the presidium meeting of the Conference for Electing Deputies of the HKSAR to the 14th NPC on Monday.
The electoral conference held its first plenary session earlier in the day, which was attended by 1,107 members. A 19-member presidium including HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee was elected to preside over the conference according to a method for the HKSAR to elect deputies to the 14th NPC. JAKARTA -- At least 62 people were killed, 25 went missing and about 700 others were injured after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia's West Java province on Monday, officials said.
The quake has also caused heavy damages to many houses, buildings and infrastructure facilities. The tremors were strongly felt in the national capital Jakarta. (Indonesia-Earthquake)
