HANOI, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Police of northern Vietnam's Dien Bien province has arrested four local men for trafficking 115 cakes of heroin from Laos, Vietnam News Agency reported on Monday.

The four people, aged from 20 to 26, are all from Dien Bien province.

Local police started the investigation in mid-April and the heroin seized in the province's Tuan Giao district weighs 40.2 kg, the news agency reported.

The traffickers admitted that the drug had been bought in Laos and was being transported to northern Vietnam's Lao Cai province for sale.

According to the Vietnamese law, those convicted of smuggling over 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kg of methamphetamine are punishable by death.
