HANOI -- A house fire in central Vietnam's Nghe An province killed six people, local media reported Tuesday.

TOKYO -- The main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ) and three other opposition parties on Tuesday jointly filed a vote of no confidence in Japanese Prime Minster Yoshihide Suga's Cabinet.

BRUSSELS -- The Chinese Mission to the European Union (EU) on Monday rejected NATO's claim of presenting "systemic challenges," saying it is a slander on China's peaceful development and represents "a continuation of the Cold War mentality and bloc politics."

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Chinese mission said China is committed to a defense policy "that is defensive in nature," and its pursuit of defense and military modernization is "justified, reasonable, open and transparent." (China-EU-NATO)

UNITED NATIONS -- Implementation of the peace process in Sudan remains limited with intercommunal violence in Darfur on the rise, the Security Council heard Monday as the head of that country's sanctions committee reiterated the need for targeted sanctions.

Sven Jurgenson, permanent representative of Estonia to the United Nations, briefing the 15-member organ in his capacity as chair of the Security Council committee established pursuant to Resolution 1591 (2005) concerning the Sudan, said that through the reporting period -- March 25 to June 14 -- targeted sanctions, including the Darfur arms embargo, continue thwarting actions that may spoil peace in the country.
