Live COVID-19 updates: Russia adds 8,995 cases

BEIJING, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia confirmed 8,995 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 4,684,148, the official monitoring and response center said Friday.

The national COVID-19 death toll rose by 397 to 104,795 in the past day, while the number of the country's recoveries grew by 9,109 to 4,310,557.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 5,363 within one day to 1,594,722, with the death toll adding by 123 to 43,196, the Health Ministry said on Friday.

According to the ministry, 5,975 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,444,229.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia on Friday confirmed 262 new COVID-19 cases and two more fatalities in the past 24 hours, the country's Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a statement.

Of the new cases, 232 were found in capital Phnom Penh, 12 in Preah Sihanouk province, four in Kandal province, two each in Kampong Cham, Prey Veng, Pursat, Siem Reap and Takeo provinces, and one each in Kampong Speu, Kampong Thom, Svay Rieng and Tboung Khmum provinces, the statement said.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentina on Thursday reported 24,999 new COVID-19 infections and 383 more deaths in the past 24 hours, for a cumulative total of 2,629,156 cases and 58,925 deaths, the Ministry of Health said.

The province of Buenos Aires, with 1,130,148, and the city of Buenos Aires, with 297,569, have the highest number of total cases.

SAN FRANCISCO -- U.S. San Francisco Mayor London Breed on Thursday announced that the city is opening more neighborhood COVID-19 vaccine sites as part of equity strategy.

A new site, operated in partnership with the Latino Task Force, is one of three neighborhood sites opening in the next three weeks, the announcement said.
